For Malaysia-based Norhayati Isa, known as Yat, feeling a strong sense of belonging is important in her role shaping the manufacturing processes that bring Resmed’s health technologies to life.
As a lead new product introduction (NPI) engineer, Yat is responsible for developing and refining manufacturing processes that ensure Resmed products are made efficiently, reliably, and with patient comfort in mind. Alongside her technical work, Yat shares how connection and collaboration make Resmed feel like home.
Q: Yat, can you tell us about your role and what your team does at Resmed?
I started as a senior NPI engineer and was recently promoted to lead NPI engineer. My team focuses on developing new manufacturing processes for new products. We design and propose processes that ensure high-quality output at an optimal cost. We also collaborate with vendors to create jigs, tools, and machines. This requires strong analytical skills to ensure everything works efficiently on the production line. Ultimately, our goal is to make sure our products reach customers with the highest level of comfort.
Q: How does your work contribute to Resmed’s mission of creating life-changing health technologies that people love?
We work closely with the product design team to ensure that every aspect of every new product, like our mask headgear, is manufactured with comfort in mind. For example, we recently developed a fabric sleeve for the headgear’s silicone tube that touches the patient’s skin. This small change makes a big difference in comfort, which can determine whether a patient continues therapy. It’s fulfilling to know our work directly impacts people’s lives.
Q: What challenges do you face in your role? What keeps you going?
Every day brings new challenges, especially when introducing new machines to the production line. We need to ensure they run smoothly to meet demand forecasts. But what keeps me going is the incredible support from my team and leadership. We collaborate closely with production and planning teams and that strong communication helps us solve issues quickly.
Q: Outside of work, how do you and your colleagues connect socially?
Socializing is a big part of our work culture here. We have the Teh Tarik Club (teh tarik is a Malaysian milk tea), which organizes activities like badminton sessions twice a month. It’s a great way to unwind and connect with colleagues in a relaxed setting. We also regularly gather for lunch or dinner. These casual gatherings help build a sense of belonging.
Q: Resmed Malaysia is expanding with a new office that’s coming soon. What does that mean for you and your team?
I’m really excited about the new site! It will include facilities like a gym and a pool table, which will make our work-life balance even better. It shows that Resmed cares about our well-being and wants to create a joyful work environment. Being part of this growth feels like we’re building Resmed’s future together.
Q: What motivates you to come to work every day?
I have a passion for mechanical engineering. I love designing machines and processes from scratch and seeing them come to life. It’s rewarding to know that what we build helps people sleep and breathe better. That purpose keeps me inspired.
Q: What makes Resmed special to you?
Resmed is a place where you feel supported, where your work has meaning and where you belong. The culture, the people and the mission all come together to make it a truly special company.
