Meet Sona Sarian, Director – Global Engineering, Motor Assembly

Why did you join ResMed?

My personal values have always guided my life decisions. While finishing my degree at UCSD, I knew I wanted a job that was not only meaningful but also aligned with my values. I wanted each day at work to be fulfilling and impactful. When I discovered ResMed’s internship opportunity, I knew I had found the perfect fit. From day one, I felt a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Learning about the Manufacturing site in Los Angeles felt like the stars had aligned, allowing me to work for a company I loved while moving back to LA to be with my family.

That was nearly 18 years ago, and I’ve never looked back!

Tell us about your career journey so far.

My career journey with ResMed has been nothing short of an adventure. After my internship, I started as a Manufacturing Engineer in the Motor Manufacturing division in Los Angeles. My eagerness to learn and contribute led me to become a Manufacturing Project Engineer, where I oversaw entire manufacturing lines and collaborated with various teams.

In 2009, I embraced the opportunity to become a Supplier Quality Engineer. This role was a game-changer, offering me a chance to explore a wider range of products and processes. As the SQE function was new to our site, I had the unique opportunity to help shape it. Traveling the world to visit suppliers felt like living an episode of “How It’s Made,” but with a quality-focused twist. It was an incredible experience that broadened my technical knowledge and cultural awareness.

As the company expanded, so did the SQE team, and I transitioned from an individual contributor to a team leader. Later, as Quality Manager, I became part of the global quality organization, fostering collaboration and further growth. Witnessing senior leaders prioritize patient safety above all else was inspiring and fueled my desire to keep learning and expanding my horizons. This passion led me to my current role as Director of Global Engineering, where every moment has been a phenomenal learning opportunity. I eagerly look forward to the rest of my journey at ResMed.

What makes ResMed special?

ResMed’s mission is at the heart of what makes it special. Hearing from CPAP users about how their machines have transformed their lives brings me immense joy and pride. But what truly sets us apart is how we carry out our mission. ResMed consistently prioritizes patients and customers over financial figures, a value that has driven our success for the past 35 years.

Internally, ResMed prioritizes its thousands of employees worldwide, with their well-being deeply embedded in our culture. I’ve had the privilege of working with many colleagues across the organization, and I’ve never encountered anyone “too busy to help.” This “people first” culture resonates throughout all layers and teams.

Personally, ResMed is special because of the continuous opportunities for development and growth. I’ve never felt the need to look elsewhere, as ResMed has always supported my professional journey and provided an environment where I can thrive.
