软件工程师Pradeepa Senanayake远程办公的一天

6:30am – 8:30am

I usually get up at 6.30am and stay in bed a while contemplating life until my second alarm reminds me that it is time for my morning coffee. Usually all my friends start their day around the same time, which makes the morning coffee really interesting. Most of the days, after my coffee I read a book and give myself a little bit of time to get ready for the day. Then I make myself some breakfast and go sit at my desk, which is my office, to start the day’s work.

9:00am to lunch

I eat my breakfast while going through mails, the calendar and looking at the Jira board to get myself prepared for what the day could be throwing at me. Every day is different. There are days where I have meetings from 9am on, but generally I have less meetings in the morning than in the afternoon. If I’m leading a feature, I look at all the tasks and think of a target for the day, which is almost always overly optimistic, but helps me to be focused throughout the day.

As a routine, I look at any pending code reviews I need to finish. Once the code reviews are done for the day, I start the task assigned to me and keep on working on that task until the end of the day.

We have our stand-ups at 10 am (ish) and after the meetings I walk to my favourite café and order a large cap with one sugar. (Working from home merits!) Most of the days, even though it is not healthy, the cap comes with a cookie. There are days where I go for the coffee while being in low-commitment group catch up meetings.

Lunch time

Lunch time routine has changed a lot due to COVID.

When I’m at the office, I usually go to the gym every day and work out. After the workout, I usually have a light lunch with whoever is in the kitchen area L1N. We chat about regular stuff. If there is no one in the kitchen, I skim the paper while having lunch.

When I am working from home, I usually forget lunch until it’s late and then make myself a sandwich. There are days where I feel motivated to go out for a run during the lunch break, but it hasn’t been very regular. The last couple of weeks I started training my voice. I try to do some voice training exercises before I go for lunch. I could never do this at the office.

1:30pm – 4:30pm

Workwise, there is no difference between my mornings and my afternoons, the work, the meetings and the responsibilities are almost the same. However, often I feel that afternoons are more productive than mornings. There are days where I feel that the latter half of the day is longer, but this may be because I don’t go for a coffee in the afternoon.

I enjoy the tools that we have to communicate remotely and I’m amazed at how effective they are. There are days where I pair up with team mates in the afternoon, which makes remote work less isolating and very interesting.

5:00pm – 7.00pm

After work, I try my best to go for a long walk or a long run. Usually I run or walk for 6 km. If it’s running, I don’t take my phone or listen to music, I just run.

Since my day is filled with very technical work, I cherish staring at the tranquil view of the sun setting over the Parramatta River, which looks ever so slightly different every day.

7:00pm – 10:30pm

There are days where I play tennis or badminton with my friends. We usually play very late. It’s always nice to play with friends and I enjoy every minute of it.

Every other day I make myself dinner. I’m Sri Lankan, but I don’t cook Sri Lankan meals every day, as it just takes too long to cook Sri Lankan meals. I usually cook some pasta or spaghetti, or make myself some steak or salmon. (I’m not talking about a single meal)

After my daily workout, I have a wash, cook dinner and have dinner with my friends. To wind down, I play some games on my PC or watch Netflix. My evenings are usually not planned through as much. There are days where I just read a book or play some guitar.

At the end of my day, I normally have a long call with my fiancée before going to sleep. The time is almost 10.30pm and it’s a bit creepy that the last words I hear every day are from my google home, saying “Your alarm is set to 6.30 am; good night, Pradeepa (in a robotic accent)”.
